Problem Description

Cisco Nexus 3048 Switches might become stuck in a reload cycle when running a Cisco NX-OS Software Release earlier than Release 7.0(3)I7(5).

Background

Cisco Nexus 3048 Switches may become stuck in a reload cycle during upgrade due to an issue with overcurrent protection tolerance, resulting in no console output.

Problem Symptom

After the Nexus 3048 device is reloaded or power-cycled, it reloads continuously with a flashing blue LED.

There will be no output on the console.

Workaround/Solution

To mitigate this issue, upgrade the power sequencer to firmware version 5.5.

Option 1: Upgrade the power sequencer using a binary script if the device is running a Cisco NX-OS Software 7.0 Release earlier than 7.0(3)I7(5).

Download n3048_pwr_seq_v55_i7.bin.
Copy the binary to the bootflash of the switch.

Enable the bash shell feature and run bash.

switch# configure terminal
switch(config)# feature bash-shell
switch(config)# end
switch# run bash sudo su
root@switch#

Change your current directory to /tmp/ and copy the power sequencer upgrade script from the bootflash to /tmp/.

root@switch#cp /bootflash/n3048_pwr_seq_v55_i7.bin .
root@switch#
```
Change the file permissions of the power sequencer upgrade script so that it can be executed.

root@switch#chmod +x n3048_pwr_seq_v55_i7.bin 
root@switch#
```

Execute the power sequence upgrade script.

root@switch#./n3048_pwr_seq_v55_i7.bin 
Update Seq A
Update Seq B
Power sequencer firmware updated

Option 2: Upgrade to a fixed release of Cisco NXOS Software.

The power sequencer upgrade capability and the packaged power sequencer firmware have been enabled on Cisco NX-OS Software releases 7.0(3)I7(5) and later.

For devices that are running older code, first complete the steps in Option 1, then upgrade to Release 7.0(3)I7(5) or later. Upgrading the power sequencer before upgrading the software is necessary. Otherwise, the NX-OS Software upgrade may cause the device to become stuck in a reload cycle.

If the device is already running NX-OS Software Release 7.0(3)I7(5) or later, perform another installation of the same software image or any later fixed NX-OS image (Example: install all nxos bootflash:nxos.7.0.3.I7.5.bin). This should upgrade the power sequencer firmware.

How to Identify Affected Products

This field notice only affects N3K-C3048TP-1GE with power sequencer firmware earlier than version 5.5.

For a device that is running NX-OS Software Release 7.0(3)I7(5) or later, use the command in the following example and check the firmware version of the power sequencer in the output:

If the output of Running-Version for power-seq is earlier than version 5.5, the device may be affected by the issue described in this field notice and the power sequencer needs to be upgraded.
