CSCwd03250 | DST Feature Incorrectly Marks Global Hot Spare as Bad |
Customers who are running Cisco UCS Compute systems with firmware Release 4.2(2a) may encounter the "Local disk X is degraded" severe fault message. This may occur on drives that are configured as Global Hot Spare or Unconfigured Good.
There is a timing issue between the RAID or the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) Controller and the Drive Self-Test (DST) feature that causes a severe fault notification, which leads to the hard drive being incorrectly marked as degraded. It is not necessary to replace the drive.
The error messages will appear after the DST tries to run for a Global Hot Spare drive or an Unconfigured Good drive. The DST runs every seven days. Manually running DST can also trigger the severe fault message.
Solution
Upgrading to the following software releases will resolve the issue:
Workaround
Alternatively, there is a two-step workaround. Step One clears the Cisco Integrated Management Controller (IMC) fault, and Step Two prevents the issue from recurring.
1. Manually run the DST to clear the fault in the Cisco IMC.
First, SSH to the IMC IP address. Then, enter the following CLI commands:
scope chassis
scope storageadapter <adapter_name>
scope physical-drive <drive_slot>
start-diag
2. Disable the DST.
Then, enter the following CLI commands:
CIMC # scope diag-config
CIMC /diag-config # scope drive-diag-config
CIMC/diag-config/drive-diag-config # show
This shows that Background DST Enabled is set to true, thus enabled.
CIMC/diag-config/drive-diag-config # set bg_diag_enabled false
CIMC/diag-config/drive-diag-config # commit
CIMC/diag-config/drive-diag-config # show
This shows that the Background DST Enabled is set to false, thus disabled.
Resetting the Cisco IMC may set the DST feature back to true. Validate the status of the DST feature after any Cisco IMC resets and adjust as necessary.
