Problem Description

A limited number of C9500-24Q, C9500-12Q, and C9500-40X devices might fail to power on. The Status LED is amber and blinks continuously.

Background

The cable tie of the power supply unit (PSU) is stiff and has a curvature which causes the cable tie to interfere with the fan blade. As a result of this interference, the PSU no longer works. Eventually, the affected switch fails to function and leads to network failure.

Problem Symptom

The Status LED of the affected switch turns from green to amber and blinks continuously.

Workaround/Solution

In order to confirm and fix a cable tie issue, complete these steps:

  1. Verify that the Status LED in the PSU glows amber and blinks continuously.
  2. Connect the PSU to the other working switch/slot in order to determine if it still fails. See Guidance for Installing a Power Supply for general handling of a PSU.
  3. Remove the affected PSU and check to see if the cable tie blocks the fan blade. If it blocks the fan blade (the cable tie is shown in the picture), pull the cable tie out of the fan blade and tie it appropriately so that it does not touch the fan blade.
  4. Insert the PSU back into the slot and power on the device. The device should work now.
  5. If the device/PSU still fails, create a Return Material Authorization (RMA) for the PSU and ask the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) to flag the faulty PSU for failure analysis.

How To Identify Affected Products

Check the part number of the PSU printed on the product label:

  • If the part number is 341-100601-01 and the revision is earlier than B0, the PSU might be affected by the cable tie issue.
  • If the part number is 341-100601-01 and the revision is B0 or later, the cable tie issue is fixed.
