CSCut53599 C2960X/6800ia RPS is not functioning correctly, reports "RPS is not responding"

Problem Description

Catalyst 2960X/XR switches and Catalyst 6800IA/FEX as listed in the Products Affected section might exhibit any of these errors when you insert a stack module with stack cable:

  • Uplink interfaces might occasionally fail
  • Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) might report as Unknown
  • Software might report the switch hardware is not authentic
  • Redundant Power Supply (RPS) might not respond

Catalyst 2960X/6800IA platforms with GLC-T or selected SFPs plugged into uplink ports are affected and this issue might also occasionally appear without SFP/GLC-T.

Background

This issue is seen in the previously mentioned Catalyst 2960X/2960XR platforms that run software earlier than version 15.2(2)E4 and 6800IA platform that run software earlier than version 15.1(2)SY5.

Problem Symptom

One of these symptoms might be seen:

  • When the uplink goes down, the show idprom command shows this error: 
     hulc_sfp_iic_intf_read_eeprom sfp _index 3 yeti_iic_read_retry fail
  • After the switch reloads, the switch or the stack module might fail device authentication with either of these error messages:
    • For stack module authentication failure: "%ILET-1-DEVICE_AUTHENTICATION_FAIL" - The FlexStack module inserted in this switch might not have been manufactured by Cisco or with Cisco's authorization. If your use of this product is the cause of a support issue, Cisco might deny operation of the product and support under your warranty or under a Cisco technical support program such as Smart Net. Contact Cisco's Technical Assistance Center (TAC) for more information.
    • For switch authentication failure: "%ILET-1-AUTHENTICATION_FAIL" - This switch might not have been manufactured by Cisco or with Cisco's authorization. This product might contain software that was copied in violation of Cisco's license terms. If your use of this product is the cause of a support issue, Cisco might deny operation of the product and support under your warranty or under a Cisco technical support program such as Smart Net. Contact Cisco's TAC for more information.
  • The RPS is declared as not responding with this error message: 
    PLATFORM_ENV-1-RPS_ACCESS: RPS is not responding

Workaround/Solution

C2960X Switches

  1. Check the software version. If you have a version earlier than Version 15.0(2a)EX5, upgrade to Version 15.0(2a)EX5 or later. Versions 15.2(2)E4 and later are recommended.
  2. If you already upgraded to Version 15.0(2a)EX5 or later, remove all the power cables and connect them back in order to hard reset (power cycle) the device.
  3. If the issue still persists after an upgrade/hard reset or if there is a RPS in the system and it does not respond, upgrade to Version 15.2(2)E4.
    Note: When you upgrade a switch from EX releases to Version 15.2(2)E4, always perform a hard reset.

C6800IA Switches

  1. Check the software version. If you have a version earlier than Version 15.1.2-SY5, upgrade to Version 15.1.2-SY6 or later. Version 15.2(1)SY2 and later are recommended.
  2. If you already upgraded to Version 15.1.2-SY6 or later, remove all the power cables and connect them back in order to hard reset (power cycle) the device.
    Note: When you upgrade a switch, always perform a hard reset.
