CSCui54804 | PRE5: New version of CPU P4040 support |
Cisco IOS Software Releases earlier than Version 12.2.33-SCH2 will not work with the new processor revision on the UBR10-PRE5 Supervisor Card.
Cisco Universal Broadband Router (uBR10012) Supervisor Card has transitioned to Revision 3 of a new processor, which replaces Revision 2 of the original processor. The new processor is not recognized properly by Cisco IOS Software Version 12.2.33-SCH or 12.2.33-SCH1.
The UBR10-PRE5 CPU supplier to Cisco has announced the End of Sale of Revision 2 of their processor and has started to ship Revision 3.
Unfortunately, the new Revision (Revision 3) is not compatible with uBR10012 that runs 12.2.33-SCH or 12.2-33-SCH1 Cisco IOS releases.
In order to support this new processor revision, Cisco IOS code changes have been made to the latest releases of uBR10012 Cisco IOS software. Support for the new processor revision is included with these releases:
The UBR10-PRE5 Supervisor Card with the revision 3 processor that runs Cisco IOS Release 12.2.33-SCH or 12.2.33-SCH1 will have its firmware downloaded incorrectly, which results in unpredictable behavior post-boot up.
In the boot up process, this error message is observed once in the console log:
! MAJOR ??? Error [../../../../cisco.comp/dev-freescale-dpaa/src/api/platform_p4080_ds.c:591 PLATFORM_GetChipRevInfo]: Invalid ID; Unknown chip ID
Workaround/Solution
Cisco recommends to upgrade the uBR10012 Cisco IOS software release, as indicated in the "How to Identify Hardware Levels" section, for the UBR10-PRE5 cards with the processor revision 3.

The new hardware revisions of UBR10-PRE5 cards can be identified by a combination of the Top Assembly Number (TAN), Deviation # D507963, and RP serial number range that starts with CAT1837.
Note: UBR10-PRE5 is an assembly of two boards - the Routing Processor (RP) and the Forwarding Processor (FP).
The serial number of interest pertains to the serial number of the RP board and not that of the FP board. Refer to CLI command output and pictures in this section for more information.
Additionally, the revision of the processor is displayed via the Cisco IOS show version command or in the UBR10-PRE5 boot up process as shown next.
Processor Revision 2:
P4040E REV 2.0 CPU at 1404Mhz, 128KB L2 Cache, 2048KB L3 Cache
Processor Revision 3:
P4040E REV 3.0 CPU at 1405Mhz, 128KB L2 Cache, 2048KB L3 Cache
The PID, TAN, Serial Number (RP), and Deviation # can be verified either by the CLI command or a visual inspection of the UBR10-PRE5 card as shown here:
A - CLI Command
B - Visual Inspection of the Card
